Ancient Ostia

Ostia Antica is just 18 km away from Rome and it takes about
40 minutes to reach the archaeological area, is a good occasion
to leave the crowd of Rome to have a walk in an archaeological area.
Ostia in latin means ‘mouth of
the river due to its position for the Tiber, it was the port of Rome and
the first ancient roman colony.Its ruins are better preserved than those
in Rome and here you can see the ancient roman everyday life.
According to the legend Ostia was founded by Anco Marzio one of the
seven kings of Rome and just in the V century with the Barbarian invasions,
was abandoned so at contrary of other ancient Roman towns like Pompei or
Leptis Magna that are better preserved is important because was going on
during all the centuries of the ancient roman civalization. .
The archaeological excavations started during the XIX century and
have brought the ancient city back to light, a rare witness of x centuries of
Roman civilization.
During our tour we will walk Decumanus Maximus visiting the
thermal baths the ‘Thermopolium’ an ancient Roman snack bar reaching the
Forum with its temples, the Basilica and the Forica (the public latrine).
From here we will strart our way back to the
parking.
